Outback travellers head into the mud

Tuesday September 7, 2010 - 11:14 EST

Dozens of people who have been stranded at a hotel on the Birdsville Track since the weekend are trying to leave today.

Phil Gregurke from the Mungeranie Hotel says the track will be temporarily opened to four-wheel-drives if they have high clearance and a snorkel.

The area has been drenched again in recent days.

He says there remains a danger people could get bogged.

"I wouldn't say [it is] extremely dangerous but just as long as a lot of care and caution is taken and people go down in a group," he said.

"If anybody has any problems, there's somebody there to tow them out."
