Waterfalls have been cascading down Uluru this week as thunderstorms rumble over the Red Centre. A low pressure trough stretching across Australia's interior triggered showers and thunderstorms during the past four days. A rain gauge at Yulara Airport near Uluru recorded 54mm of rain between Monday afternoon and this morning. This is more than three month's worth of rain at this time of year. The heaviest downpour at Uluru occurred late on Wednesday when 16mm fell in just 10 minutes, turning the monolith into an intricate network of streams and waterfalls. Further north, Walungurru Airport had their wettest day since December yesterday after collecting 69mm in 24 hours. This was more rain than the last three and a half months combined at this site. Further showers and thunderstorms are likely on Friday before drier conditions return to the Interior from the weekend. Take extra care if you are driving in the region as some roads may become temporarily inaccessible due to flooding.
