The Mid North Coast has seen daily rainfall totals of over 100mm for the second time this month, with some towns seeing their heaviest falls in years.
Port Macquarie received its heaviest rain in close to three years, with 100mm falling in the 24 hours to 9am on Thursday. Taree also picked up a daily total of just over 100mm, bringing the monthly total to 248mm and close to double the average.
The heavy and persistent rain was triggered by a low pressure trough hugging the coast, which was fed moisture from the Tasman Sea by south-easterly winds.
A severe weather warning was issued for the Mid North Coast on Thursday morning due to the risk of flash flooding. Showers are expected to continue today about the region, with storms also possible. These storms could bring more heavy falls due to high amounts of atmospheric moisture.
River levels in the Mid North Coast are currently below flood levels, although were rising on Thursday morning. Further south in the Hunter, the Williams River at Dungog was experiencing minor flooding.
