With Melbourne's water storages at 81 per cent full, the city's water restrictions are being eased.

The storages are at the highest level at this time of year since 1996.

Water Minister Peter Walsh says the change that means people can use sprinklers any day of the week between 6:00pm and 10:00am.

"There's been a cultural change in how Melburnians use water and we expect them to maintain their water-wise ways even with these changes," he said.

He says the water authorities estimate there will be an eight gigalitre increase in water use with the rule change.

"I don't think that changing from stage one back to permanent water rules will make a significant difference," Mr Walsh said.

"Obviously pricing is one of the signals in the decisions they make, but I think it's as much a cultural issue as much as a pricing issue."
