Melbourne: spring one hour, winter the next

Melbourne: spring one hour, winter the next
The run of glorious weather for Melbourne is about to end abruptly. Warm mornings and sunny days have characterised the weather in Melbourne over the past few days, which have been six degrees above average. An approaching front will bring about the famous 'four seasons in a day' Melbourne weather that often catches out unsuspecting holiday-makers. Today started off feeling rather summer-like as the northerly winds kept the city toasty. As the winds shift direction and the showers roll into the city, the mercury will quickly fall from the balmy 24 degrees to about 12 degrees in the late afternoon. The wind chill is likely to make it feel a closer to eight degrees. The winds will be particularly strong with the change making it next-to-impossible to operate an umbrella should you get caught in the showers and small hail. So far Frankston saw a gust of 109km/h this afternoon, Port Wilson saw a 106km/h gust while Avalon saw 104km/h at 2pm. There is a current Road Weather Alert for Melbourne's motorists, as showers and wind will reduce visibility with the rain and wind pounding the windscreen. Drivers are advised to drive to the conditions. It will be a chilly night as the coldest part of the airmass arrives. Wednesday will be a cooler day across the state, although as a high moves to the east, the temperatures will start to warm up in time for the long weekend.
