Melbourne's water woes worsen

Tom Saunders, Thursday October 16, 2008 - 15:55 EDT

Melbourne's severe dry spell is set to continue until at least the end of October according to weatherzone, putting further pressure on the city's dwindling water supply.

Following their driest September on record, October has brought little relief with only 9mm recorded in the city gauge.

So far this spring, traditionally Melbourne?s wettest season, only 21mm of rain has fallen, well down on the September-October average of 125mm. If Melbourne does not record another 14mm in the next two weeks it will be their driest start to spring in over 150 years of records.

The water storage level for Melbourne is currently sitting on 35% and will drop to around 25% by next winter if significant rain is not received over the next few months. With weatherzone's seasonal forecast calling for continued dry conditions over southern Victoria to finish 2008 this appears to be a likely scenario.
