Melbourne running cold

Brett Dutschke
Melbourne has just chilled to 2.3 degrees, its coldest morning in five years and its not likely to become much warmer for at least a week. The last time the city was colder was in May 2008, when it dipped to 2.2 degrees. This morning it was below freezing in many suburbs, including Cerberus, Moorabbin, Viewbank, Scoresby and Coldstream. Coldstream recorded the lowest temperature, minus 3.6 degrees just before 8am, about eight degrees below the average June minimum. This frigid weather enabled frost and ice to form, giving some residents an extra job to do before driving to work. Car windscreens were iced up and needed a hot shower, making people rush back inside to re-boil the kettle. After having light frost yesterday this is the first time in six years that Viewbank has had back-to-back sub-zero mornings. Even though frost in uncommon is parts of Melbourne, some suburbs will have to endure it for a few more mornings. It is a risk almost every morning right through to this time next week. The city should chill to about five degrees or less each morning, potentially making it the coldest week in seven years. A weak high pressure system is almost stationary, keeping chilly winds light and skies mostly clear, near-perfect ingredients for frost.
