Large swell filling into Margaret River

Large swell filling into Margaret River
Southern parts of Western Australia are beginning to see the first pulse of large swell which is set to produce high quality surf. Today signifies the first day of the Margaret River Pro event where the world's best surfers battle for the title. After conditions remained pretty ordinary for the first two events of the year at Snapper Rocks, Queensland and Bells Beach, Victoria, the forecast for the Margaret River Pro is looking enticing. Competition began this morning with clean 8 ft waves filling in over 'The Box', a small reef just north of the main break. This swell was generated by a strong cold front in the southern Indian Ocean which whipped up gale force west/southwesterly winds across a broad area. As this swell train moved towards southern parts of Western Australia, it became more refined and ordered. In conjunction with light southwesterly winds, the waves that are generated across the contest area are clean and hollow barrels. This swell will ease back slightly on Thursday before a second strong pulse follows is close pursuit. Throughout Thursday afternoon, this swell could lead to 10 ft faces across the event arena. Again, winds should remain light from the west/southwest keeping faces groomed. The final pulse of southwesterly ground swell is due on Saturday and could even result in the largest surf of the waiting period. Fortunately, early indications show that winds are still looking to remain favourable throughout Saturday. Good luck to all competitors.
