Hunter's taste of spring won't last

Meteorologists say some unusually warm weather across the Hunter won't last long - ABC

Hunter Valley residents have woken to a surprisingly balmy morning, with parts of the region recording temperatures 13 degrees above the average.

Over the past month the northern parts of the Valley have shivered through some frosty mornings, with Scone, Murrurundi and Merriwa all recording temperatures below freezing this week.

But Weatherzone Meteorologist Ben Domensino says there was a surprising change overnight.

"We've got a warm air mass being drawn over New South Wales ahead of an approaching cold front," he said.

"This has kept the temperature quite high overnight and around the Upper Hunter, places like Scone and Murrurundi were 13 and 12 degrees above average."

Scone's lowest temperature overnight was 17 degrees.

It was also warmer than average through the Lower Hunter overnight, with Newcastle recording a low of 14, five above the average.

But residents are being warned it is too early to get out their beach towels, with a cold front pushing across the Hunter likely to bring temperatures back down over the next week.

"There's currently a severe weather warning for damaging winds out for the Hunter region," Mr Domensino said.

"We're expecting winds to approach the 60 kilometre per hour mark throughout the day in the Hunter today and in the wake of this front we're going to see much cooler weather."
