Hobart’s equal warmest April in 20 years

30/04/2010: April has been a very warm month for Hobart this year; in fact it has been the equal warmest April in 20 years, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Minimum temperatures were high, particularly during the second week of the month, averaging 11 degrees, two above the long-term average. This means that Hobart just sweated through its highest minimum temperatures in 20 years.

Maximum temperatures were also quite unusual for this time of year, with an average of 19 degrees this April. This made it Hobart’s highest average maximum temperature in 17 years.

Combining both minimum and maximum temperatures, the city just experienced its equal warmest April in 20 years, or the warmest in 17 years.

“Northerly winds dominated over Hobart this April, driving in the warmer air from the mainland,” said Samuel Terry, meteorologist for weatherzone.com.au. “On top of this there was a lack of intense cold fronts over southeastern Australia, allowing the warm air to linger for quite some time.”

Coupled with the warmth was a lack of rainfall, with only 16 millimetres accumulated across the entire month, 35 millimetres below the average. All in all, this was Hobart’s driest April in eight years, and the fourth driest in the last three decades.

“Hobart has been fairly dry over the last month, but this hasn’t been the case for all of Tasmania,” said Terry. “The northerly and northwesterly winds that we’ve seen persist have brought showers and rain to the north and west. By the time they reached Hobart, though, they were too dry to bring any rain.”

“In the next week we’re expecting an intense cold front to push through. Behind the front, winds will go southerly and should bring some rain to Hobart and the rest of the Lower Derwent area.”
