Highest fire danger since Black Saturday
Brett Dutschke

Parts of Victoria and South Australia are experiencing their highest fire danger since Black Saturday, reaching catastrophic levels.
By 12:30pm on Wednesday the highest fire danger rating (FDR) was recorded at Mount Gellibrand, just west of Geelong, where it peaked at 147. At that time winds were north-northwesterly, gusting 87km/h, the temperature was 36 degrees and humidity just 10%.
While an FDR of 147 is well and truly in the catastrophic category, it is still well short of the 350 recorded on February 7th, when the temperature was 45 degrees in 113km/h winds.
Some other locations which are recording their highest FDRs since February 7th are:
- Werribee
- Moorabbin
- Geelong
- Avalon
- Hamilton
- Warrnambool
- Stawell
- Padthaway
- Keith
Naracoorte in South Australia's southeast recorded its highest FDR (101) in almost three years as the mercury shot past the 40-degree mark, 14 above average.
Just after 1:30pm Adelaide had reached 40.5 degrees and Melbourne 38.0.
A cooler change can be expected to move through Adelaide early this evening and Melbourne late evening.
