High winds batter NSW south coast

Wednesday July 2, 2008 - 10:26 EST

Gale force winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour are continuing to cause havoc in the Illawarra, the New South Wales south coast and Southern Highlands.

The Roads and Traffic Authority is urging motorists to take care with debris across many roads and traffic signals blacked out.

The State Emergency Service in the Illawarra has so far received more than 90 calls for help.

A section of roof has come off a building at Fairy Meadow, while a tree has fallen on a house at Tomerong near Nowra.

Integral Energy's manager for the southern region, Bill Watts, says an area from northern Wollongong to Foxground near Berry has power outages.

"A lot of that debris that is floating around is going up into the wires and creating outages, so we have 7,500 customers off at the moment and we are working our way through the list to get to them all," he said.
