Heavy snow closes Orange Airport and parts of Great Western HighwayBy Nick Pedley, Friday July 18, 2014 - 11:22 EST
Heavy snow in the state's central-west has caused problems on the region's roads and prompted the closure of Orange Airport.
The Great Western Highway between Bathurst and Lithgow was this morning blocked in both directions after heavy snowfall.
Authorities decided to shut the highway because of snow and black ice and warned there were no local diversions available.
It was reopened later in the morning, but police warned conditions remained slippery.
Authorities said Orange Airport would be closed until at least midday.
Flights were being redirected to Bathurst and passengers were then being transported by bus to Orange.
A truck accident in the Blue Mountains also closed the Great Western Highway in both directions at Blackheath.
A three-vehicle accident was affecting eastbound lanes of the highway at nearby Katoomba.
Snow was also causing problems on the highway between Mount Victoria and Medlow Bath, and between Katoomba and Wentworth Falls.
Cabonne and Orange council officers were also warning miners in the Cadia Valley, south of Orange, to take care on Forest Road. Police described the road as "sloshy".
The road to the summit of Mt Canobolas, south-west of Orange, was closed.
Traffic on the Mitchell Highway at Lucknow was also affected by the weather.
There was no access to Oberon due to the snow affecting traffic on Duckmaloi Road and Jenolan Caves Road at Hampton.
Roads were reopening throughout the morning, and most of the snow in Orange had melted by about 10:30am.
Goulburn police were also warning motorists to drive carefully after heavy snow in the southern tablelands.
