Heavy rain drenches Goulburn Murray

Thursday November 20, 2008 - 11:40 EDT

There have been heavy falls of rain in Victoria's Goulburn Murray region overnight.

Callers to the ABC's Rural Report have reported more than 50 millimetres at Yambuna near Echuca, Cobram and Shepparton.

There has also been 47mm at Myhrree, 46mm at Oxley, 39mm at Alexandra, 34mm at Goughs Bay and 24mm at Deniliquin.

Geoff Ferren from the weather bureau says showers will continue today, but will ease.

"Fairly mild conditions for today and for that matter for the next few days, with temperatures not getting any more than the low 20s, but there is still a risk of thunderstorms even though the rain might be easing," he said.

"It's a very unstable set up, so there is the risk of thunderstorms. Yesterday the risk was very slight, but it's certainly more enhanced today."

Despite heavy falls of rain across the region, there was little flood damage.

Kelly Pollard from the State Emergency Service says the main call-out was a flooded house in Cobram.

With more rain expected this weekend, she says people should clear drains on their house to avoid flooding.

"Make sure their drains aren't blocked and things. It's usually blocked drains that causes the water to get back into their house, so if their drains are clear the water can escape and it usually solves a lot of the problems," she said.
