Heavy downpours hit the Peninsula
Rob Sharpe

Weipa received its heaviest rain since April. This small town on the Queensland Peninsula was inundated by 116mm of rain yesterday. These falls began during the afternoon, but as is typical in the tropics, these storms were finished in time for dinner.
The storms were caused by the monsoon trough, which is currently situated over the southern end of the Peninsula. This summer has been pretty typical for the tropics, with total summer falls already above 1000mm in many coastal regions.
The monsoon trough also triggered notable falls in the Northern Territory, where Theyona received 91mm and Central Waterhouse had 90mm.
Large falls are likely to contract to the far north tropics for the next few weeks as the monsoon trough continues to weaken and move further north. Places like Weipa in the far north should expect a few more large falls this summer, but areas further south will be seeing more dry afternoons in coming weeks.
