Heaviest rain in over a month for Mackay and Cairns

Rob Sharpe
The tropical coast of Queensland had an unusually dry start to May, however rain is set to increase. Mackay had its heaviest rain in precisely two months, when flooding rain hit the area. The showers struck yesterday morning with 21mm falling before midday. April and May have been quite dry, with only 40mm in April and 60mm so far in May. The average rainfall for both months is above 100mm. Cairns also had its heaviest falls in more than a month with 16mm in the 24 hours to 9am. So far this month, only 34mm has fallen, far below the May average of around 90mm. The heaviest falls overnight were near Innisfail, with a number of stations recording in excess of 50mm. During the next few days, showers will continue along the Queensland coast due to a moist southeasterly flow. The heaviest showers for today will fall along the North Tropical Coast. On Thursday, rain is set to increase across Queensland due to the likely development of a low pressure system and an associated trough. The heaviest rain will fall across central and eastern parts of the state on Friday. Rain is then expected to ease on Saturday before skies clear by Sunday.
