Rain to soak NSW, even already flooded areas

Rain to soak NSW, even already flooded areas
Rain is about to develop on the northern and central coast of New South Wales then become heavy and spread inland, bringing the biggest falls in months to some areas. A trough is forming just offshore and will intensify into a low pressure system late this week as it combines with a cooling atmosphere. The result will be widespread 20-to-50 millimetres of rain from Gladstone in Queensland to Nowra in NSW and inland to Walgett and Roma. Much of the rain will be welcomed by areas which have had very little in the past month or so, particularly west of the Great Diving Range, but less welcome nearer the coast. The Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast should see the heaviest downpours, potentially 100-to-300 millimetres between Thursday and the weekend, most falling in less than 24 hours. In excess of 100mm could fall in already sodden areas of the Hunter and Sydney, which was flooded by 150-to-400mm last week, a blow to those hardest hit by last week's floods and big winds. Overall, for the Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra it is not looking as wet or as windy as last week due to the low pressure system being weaker and faster-moving, however further flooding and damage is possible. Some dams are at near capacity and are at risk of overflowing. Some trees and property damaged by last week's major storm may just reach their breaking point. By late on the weekend the worst should be over with wind easing and rain clearing as the low pressure system moves swiftly away. Unfortunately for those in far western and southern inland NSW looking for follow-up rain, some areas will fail to see a drop.
