Grantham community centre closure criticised

Thursday June 28, 2012 - 11:02 EST

A Grantham resident says this weekend's closure of the town's community centre has come too soon.

It was set up in the primary school after last year's devastating flood.

Residents last night voted to set up a temporary facility until a permanent centre at the Grantham Butter Factory is open next year.

Gwen Kuhrt says the decision by authorities to close it is premature.

"I mean I could understand them saying to move on and get your life back in order to keep going ... some people have done that [but] there's other people still going through it - at the moment we're still actually living in a shed," she said.

She says many people still need the facilities.

"Because even though we've got a makeshift shower at home I still come up and use the showers up here occasionally because we're basically like in a caravan shower," she said.

"We're actually getting our house built at the moment and sometimes a couple of the chippies ... they come up and they have their showers up here as well."
