It was a cold and frosty morning across southeastern Australia on Thursday, with more freezing temperatures on the cards during the coming week.

Clear skies and light winds under a high pressure system, combined with cold air lingering behind a front, caused sub-zero temperatures and widespread frost on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The mercury dropped low enough to cause frost in parts of South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, the ACT, NSW, and southern Queensland.

Australia’s coldest place on Thursday morning was Thredbo Top Station, which reached -6.2 degrees. Outside the alps, Goulburn Airport dipped to -5.3 degrees and Canberra reached -3.3, which was their coldest morning so far this year.

Other notable lows were -3.4 degrees at Yunta and 3.6 degrees at Adelaide in South Australia, 0.9 degrees at Hobart Airport and -1.4 degrees at Roma and Applethorpe in Queensland.

Looking ahead, a large and slow-moving region of high pressure will cause more cold and frosty mornings across multiple states and territories in southeastern Australia during the coming week.
