Frost blankets chilly Queensland

Tuesday July 29, 2008 - 07:11 EST

Frost is covering most of Queensland this morning, as temperatures dropped below zero degrees Celsius across the Darling Downs and the Granite Belt overnight.

Weather bureau spokesman Brian Rolstone says chilly temperatures could have spread frost as far as Longreach and the Atherton Tablelands this morning .

"It's a result of a very deep, dry cold southerly air stream that's coming up from well south of Tassie, dries out over New South Wales, and continues to dry out over Queensland," he said.

"The dry air just chills very fast overnight, so you get this extension of the morning frost up to the north and out to the west."

It was warmer than expected across the south-east with Brisbane only dropping to nine degrees Celsius and Coolangatta recording 11 degrees Celsius.

Mr Rolstone says it will be another cool day across the south.

"The wind is still quite cool so it'll still be somewhat chilly this morning with the wind," he said.

"But the winds will ease off in the afternoon then the temperature will get up to sort of round about 18 degrees perhaps for the south-east, so it'll still feel cool and will stay like that for quite a while."
