Fresh weekend snow to lift spirits of skiers

18/07/2008: Excellent falls of snow are being forecast for this weekend, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Up to 25 centimetres of fresh snow is forecast across the resorts on Sunday and Monday, adding to the metre-plus base that is now in place.

"After a fairly slow start to the 2008 snow season during June, we have seen the weather patterns change quite substantially over the last few weeks. The frequent passage of cold fronts, westerly winds and low pressure systems has resulted in consistent falls of snow," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

Weatherzone’s snow forecast, which is indicating falls of 10 to 20 centimetres on Sunday followed up by a further 10 centimetres on Monday, can be found at www.weatherzone.com.au/snow

"A deep low and strong cold front will move across the Bight tomorrow, causing northerly winds to strengthen later in the day across the Alpine resorts. Light snow will begin to fall at high altitudes on Saturday night, before increasing and lowering to around 1100 metres by late on Sunday," Pearce said.

Perhaps the best news for skiers is that, following this weekend’s very healthy top-up, skies are likely to clear and winds drop through next week, resulting in magnificent skiing conditions.

"At this stage, we are likely to see a strong high settle over southeast Australia from next Tuesday. This will cause picture perfect days but also very cold nights – ideal for snowmaking to further top-up the cover," Pearce said.
