Flash flood threat as storms approach Sydney
05/02/2010: A large area of severe thunderstorms is approaching Sydney from the north and is likely to cause flash flooding across the city through the afternoon, according to weatherzone.com.au.
The storms are moving down from the Central Coast and Hunter Valley where they have dropped torrential rain and many lightning strikes over the last couple of hours.
"We are watching a cluster of storms make its way down from the north at the moment. These storms have dropped 15 to 25 millimetres of rain over the Central Coast in the last hour or two, leading to flash flooding," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.
"The storms will spread across the northern and eastern suburbs of Sydney between 2pm and 4pm, leading to treacherous conditions on the roads for the afternoon peak hour and school pickup."
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in force for the Sydney Metropolitan area and other districts in eastern New South Wales, warning of the potential for flash flooding.
"The storms will ease this evening, but we are in for a wet weekend in Sydney and surrounding areas as moist southeasterly winds result in persistent rain or showers over the next couple of days," Pearce said.
