Fiona crashes into eastern Canada

Fiona crashes into eastern Canada

The extra-tropical remains of Hurricane Fiona came barrelling into eastern Canada, causing widespread power outages, flooding rainfall and destructive storm surge.

Earlier this week, Hurricane Fiona made landfall over Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, leading the entire population of the island to lose power as the electrical grid was crippled by damages. As Fiona re-entered the warm Atlantic waters, the Jet Stream sent it northwards, parallel to the East U.S. coastline as it underwent extra-tropical transition.

Early on Saturday, the remnants of Hurricane Fiona made landfall into the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, bringing wind gusts in the 130-160km/h range along the coast. The strongest wind gust recorded was 171km/h, at Arisaig in Nova Scotia. The storm also brought 100 to 200mm of rainfall, with widespread falls of 50 to 100mm reaching into neighbouring provinces.

Widespread power loss has been reported across the eastern maritime of Canada, with Prince Edward Island nearly losing all power across the province, and close to half a million Nova Scotians ending up without power as well. Large and heavy surf, with significant storm surge has also caused destruction and damage across coastal parts of the maritime provinces.

Fiona is now to the north of Nova Scotia, in the Gulf of St Lawrence and will continue tracking north towards the Arctic. Further to the south, Tropical Storm Ian is in the Caribbean Sea, with forecasts for intensification and a track that leads it into highly populated areas of the Caribbean and the Gulf region of the U.S. Mainland later this week, in what forms the next chapter in this year's Atlantic Hurricane Season.
