Fears weather change may impact sugar crop
Thursday August 16, 2012 - 11:15 EST
The chairman of Mackay Sugar says a change from La Nina to El Nino could affect next year's crop.
Andrew Capello says while dry weather in November will help harvest this crop, it will not be good for sowing next season's crop.
However, he says for now the weather is being kind to the mills.
"The cold weather has the sugar at a reasonably high level, we're at about 14.5 CCS [commerciall cane sugar] which is quite high for this time of the year, so we're making a lot of sugar," he said.
"The long-term weather predictions are that we're heading into [an] El Nino effect which means we could have a dry November/December which is good for removing crop but not good for the next crop coming on.
"So we just take the good with the bad and we just act on the conditions that are presented to us."
