Families evacuated in Manila floods

Shirley Escalante, Manila, Saturday September 15, 2012 - 13:50 EST

Rescue operations are under way to help people stranded in floods in Manila after the Philippines capital was hit by fierce weekend rainstorms.

Hundreds of families have been evacuated to higher ground.

They are receiving relief supplies.

Suburbs around the city - Quezon, Pasay and Makati - were inundated overnight on Friday.

Rain is expected to continue over the weekend.

Floodwater rose as high as 2.5 metres.

Several dams and rivers are at a critical level, prompting the evacuation of residents living near their banks.

Trains have been cancelled, as well as some domestic flights out of Manila.
