Dry season for Ballarat, Ararat

Wednesday January 7, 2009 - 12:24 EDT

Ballarat and Ararat recorded some of the driest seasons of any region in Victoria last year.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Climate Report for 2008 shows that Ballarat received 70 per cent of its average rainfall, while Ararat recorded 74 per cent of its normal rainfall.

The bureau's climate meteorologist, Dr Harvey Stern, says the totals are in line with the weather conditions the region has experienced over the past decade.

But he says the situation is set to stabilise.

"It is indicative of really the last 10 years where most of the years have been below average, the latter part of the year particularly November and December there was a bit of rain coming in and the outlook for the next few months doesn't show much in the way of a departure from normal," he said.
