December temperatures below normal in Goulburn Murray

Wednesday January 7, 2009 - 14:17 EDT

The Bureau of Meteorology says conditions in the Goulburn Murray region last month were surprising, with average maximum and minimum temperatures below normal.

Rainfall was above average for the month in most parts of the region.

Dr Harvey Stern, the bureau's climate meterologist for Victoria, says the average maximum temperatures were about two degrees below normal.

"For example Shepparton 26.4 [degrees Celsius], with the normal 28.9C - and we had Wangaratta with 27.1C, and the normal is 29.1C," he said.

"The overnight temperatures also were a bit cooler than normal, [but] not as much as the daytime temperatures."
