Damaging and destructive winds wreak havoc across VIC
Meteorological mayhem on the silver screens aside, Victorians are enduring their own particular version of Into the Storm. After months of relatively stable weather conditions, Victorians have woken up to the furious power of nature, as damaging winds take over the Garden State with destructive winds over the High Country. Over the past 24 hours, northerly winds have been strengthening ahead of a front which is currently sweeping through the central districts. Overnight, the strongest winds were recorded over the Alpine areas reaching 139km/h at Mt Hotham at about 3am this morning. Further west, Mount William in the Grampians registered wind gusts of up to 115km/h at about midnight. In Melbourne, winds began to pick up from about 9pm with damaging winds spreading across the city overnight. Late last night Tullamarine Airport registered winds to 93km/h. In Docklands, winds reached 83km/h early this morning while the strongest winds were observed over Port Phillip Bay with 90km/h at the iconic seaside suburb of St Kilda and 106km/h at Fawkner Beacon in the middle of the bay. For western and central Victoria winds will begin to ease from about midday. Eastern districts however, will continue to see strong winds throughout the afternoon as the front continues to move east over the state finally easing during the evening. After a brief respite tomorrow, another front will brush the state late Wednesday and early Thursday. However, this front is looking to be weaker than the current one with damaging winds only likely on and south of the ranges. These, are likely to reach 60-80km/h across the South West and Central with brief gusts of up to 80-100km/h over the exposed areas of coast and higher elevations. A high pressure system will then move over southeastern Australia late on Thursday, bringing settled weather conditions and light winds which will last until at least early next week.
