Western Australians will be forgiven thinking its near the end of the year as temperatures climb into the thirties over the next few days.

Kalgoorlie has reached over thirty degrees on both Saturday and Sunday, and is expected to do so again on Monday and Tuesday. In the 79 years that the Kalgoorlie site has been in operation, this has never occured in September. Kalgoorlie's average maximum temperature in September is 22.3 degrees.

Eucla is reaching the same numbers, likely to exceed 30 degrees for four days in a row, which is over 7 degrees above average. While this is very warm for this time of year, it dwarfs in comparison to their hot spell in September 2004, when temperatures reached 33, 37, 33, and 38 degrees in the four days to Tuesday 21st.

These warm days are accompanied by unseasonably warm nights, about 5-7 degrees above average. Thanks to cloud from nearby thunderstorms trapping in the heat, Kalgoorlie only fell to a low of 17.6 degrees this morning, making it their hottest September night in 17 years and nearly 10 degrees above average.

Despite being much cooler, Perth is also feeling the heat, with the last four days exceeding 25 degrees. This is the warmest September spell in 8 years. However, nights have been close to average, giving some relief from the heat.

A slow-moving heat trough is currently lingering over WA and is drawing heat south from the hot Kimberley and Pilbara where temperatures have regularly reaching into the high thirties this month. Relief will arrive late on Tuesday for the south as a weak front passes, leaving strong onshore winds in its wake.
