Central Qld towns hit by more flooding

By William Rollo, Wednesday February 27, 2013 - 18:04 EDT

Two rural communities in central Queensland are dealing with the latest round of flooding.

At Goovigen, south of Rockhampton, the Callide Creek had reached 10.25 metres late this afternoon, which is just below the major flood level.

Banana Shire Mayor Ron Carige says it is still rising.

"We thought the peak would have gone through there, something is holding it up from getting away," he said.

Councillor Carige says the impact on farms is just as bad as the January floods.

At Mimdale, between Gladstone and Bundaberg, the Baffle Creek catchment is expected to peak at around 15m tonight - one metre above the major flood level.

Almost 2m of water is spilling over the Awoonga Dam, south west of Gladstone, causing widespread damage to farms in the upstream Boyne Valley.

Several roads are closed in the area, including the only access to Agnes Water.

Gladstone Mayor Gail Sellers says many communities on the central coast are isolated.

"It is hard because we haven't had time to get over the last lot of rain," she said.
