Canberra set to swelter

Wednesday January 7, 2009 - 12:43 EDT

Canberra is experiencing its first real taste of summer with temperatures set to reach 37 degrees this afternoon.

A cool change will bring some relief tomorrow afternoon but the hot weather is expected to return over the weekend.

Shaun Carson from the Bureau of Meteorology says if the mercury rises to 37 degrees, today will be the warmest day in two years.

"We did hit 33 [degrees] way back in October but December was so cool we didn't hit 30 degrees again until after Christmas," he said.

"So yeah summer has taken a while to sink in, I guess at least for the December, January period.

"It's caught a few people by surprise, I've had people ringing up asking is it normally this hot?"
