A cool week in Canberra

A cool week in Canberra
Every morning this month, Canberra has dropped to below freezing, with plenty of cold days as well. Canberra has seen nine consecutive mornings of below-zero temperatures, with an average temperature of minus four this week. The coldest morning in this run was on Friday when the mercury hit minus seven, the second time it has done so this winter. While Canberra is certainly no stranger to these cold mornings, cold days have also been experienced. On Sunday, the low cloud lingered well into the day, with the mercury still reading two degrees at midday. By Sunday afternoon, the cloud lifted and it managed to warm up to seven degrees. Canberra has just experienced the coldest week (not including today) since records began in 2008, with a combined maximum and minimum weekly average of just over three degrees. Using the old Canberra recording site, this record can be extended to be the coldest week since 1996. Based on maximum temperatures alone, it has been the coldest week (not including today) since 2011, with an average of 10 degrees. The next few mornings are likely to follow the trend of sub-zero temperatures, with Friday morning the first real chance to break the run. Skies may be a little too cloudy and the winds will be slightly stronger to get below freezing. Days are likely to stay chilly and in the low teens well into next week.
