A low pressure trough has brought heavy rain and storms to Canberra and much of the ACT leading to flash flooding in some areas. The first band of rain and storms swept through on Saturday evening with the rain really setting in during Sunday morning. To 9am on Sunday Canberra Airport had picked up just under 20mm while Charnwood recorded 53mm and Sullivan Creek 67mm. The heaviest of the rain has fallen over northern parts of the Territory on Sunday morning. In just one hour 60mm of rain fell at Sullivan Creek and 45mm at Woolshed Creek. Canberra Airport received 8mm in just 10 minutes. Rainfall rates this high lead to flash flooding in some parts. As of 1:50pm on Sunday a further 50mm had reached the gauge at Canberra Airport making it the wettest day in 18 months. Adding this to yesterday's 20mm this is the highest two-day total in 21 months and there is still more rain on the way. Although the heaviest of the rain has passed, rain is expected to continue until late Sunday evening and even into the small hours of Monday morning before showers become more scattered. A further 5-15mm can be expected with the potential for isolated higher falls.
