Northern NSW has capped off its soggy June with some isolated heavy storms. A series of troughs have marched across NSW this month, focusing most of their energy in the north of the state. Most of these troughs have brought widespread soaking rain. However today's trough has brought light rain across a broad area with isolated heavy thunderstorms. The best of this morning's rain was due to a thunderstorm that dumped 31mm on Bourke by 9am and a further 3mm soon after. The storm helped Bourke's monthly accumulation reach a whopping 111mm, the wettest June since 1948 and wettest month since March 2012. Wilcannia Airport collected 85mm across the month, its wettest June in at least 15 years. The parched town of Walgett gained 58mm, its wettest month since December. Across this region the average June rainfall is merely 25-30mm. Unfortunately not quite all of northwestern NSW received above average June rain, with Brewarrina only gaining 10mm. The reason for the wetter than usual June was that the high pressure systems generally sat a bit further south than usual. This led to a wet June in coastal Queensland, with that extra moisture then feeding into the inland troughs.
