Widespread severe frost will develop over inland parts of southeastern Australia during the next few nights as overnight temperatures plummet well below freezing.
On Wednesday morning many parts of NSW, Victoria and SA will wake to minimums more than five degrees below average, including minus five in Young and minus four in Mudgee and Armidale. Over the border, Renmark can expect to shiver down to minus two. A frost warning is current for northern Victoria with Wangaratta tipped to hit minus three.
Thursday morning will be just as cold with frost possibly even spreading to the typically mild coastal suburbs of Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart.
The spell of sub zero temperatures is the result of little cloud cover, light winds and very low humidity. All three will increase over the weekend, causing frost to contract to the ranges.
