Bitter cold grips Tasmania

Tom Saunders, Thursday July 3, 2008 - 17:47 EST

Temperatures dropped to single figures across parts of Tasmania on Thursday afternoon as the 4th cold front in as many days crossed the state.

Hobart reached 12 degrees on Thursday morning, average for July, but fell to just nine degrees by 3pm as cold Antarctic air pushed north. Mt Wellington, capped in white after three days of snow, was sitting on a bitter minus two degrees, four below average.

Temperatures will plummet further overnight, dropping below minus five degrees for some sheltered inland areas. This will lead to widespread frost, prompting a state-wide weather alert for icy roads.

Burnie should shiver to just two degrees, their coldest night in two years. Hobart is forecast to wake to a frosty one, their coldest morning in two months. The chilly temperatures will persist on Friday night but warmer northerly winds will develop over Tasmania during the weekend.
