Bellingen Global Carnival cancelled

Monday October 4, 2010 - 06:58 EDT

Wet weather over the past couple of days has forced organisers of the Bellingen Global carnival to cancel today's performances.

On Saturday night hundreds of people had to be evacuated from campgrounds next to the festival site.

Police say it was mainly for safety precautions as more than 1700 campers driving in and out of the paddock, had turned it into a bog.

The local State Emergency Service says cars were getting stuck in the mud and a number of trailers had to be towed out.

Organisers say they are deeply disappointed the event fell victim to the weather.

It's estimated more than four thousand people were to have attended the three day Global Carnival.

It attracts scores of acts from around Australia and overseas as well as a swag of stall holders and food outlets.
