Parts of the Northern Territory's Top End experienced their coldest morning in nearly two decades on Wednesday.

A mass of cool and dry air, combined with clear skies and light winds, caused the chilly start on Wednesday morning.

Tindal's low of 4.0 degrees was their lowest temperature in 18 years and only the third time its been this cold since 1992.

Darwin Airport dipped to 14.9 degrees on Wednesday morning. While this is five degrees below average for this time of year, it was warmer than Wednesday's 12.7 degrees, which was their lowest temperature in eight years.

Further south, Alice Springs claimed the Northern Territory's lowest official temperature of the morning with 0.4 degrees shortly after 7am.

Minimum temperatures will gradually increase during the next few mornings as warmer and more moisture-laden air returns to the Northern Territory.
