An intense thunderstorm passed over parts of Sydney on Wednesday afternoon, causing heavy rain and hail in the city's western suburbs.

Onshore southeasterly winds flowing underneath an upper-level pool of cold air passing over eastern NSW triggered the intense storms in Sydney.

Camden Airport received 9mm in an hour, causing the temperature to drop by five degrees in just 30 minutes. At 2:30pm, the mercury was sitting at just 10 degrees. Further north, streets were turned white as a thick layer of small hail covered the ground in Schofields.

Thunderstorms were also affecting other parts of NSW and southeast Queensland on Wednesday afternoon, with severe storm warnings in place for damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain in some areas.

Shortly after 4pm, a detailed severe thunderstorm warning was issued for intense storm cells in the Scenic Rim Council Area of southeast Queensland.
