Adelaide's weekend scorcher
Rob Sharpe

Adelaide's temperatures will continue to soar well into the thirties during the coming days, making this the hottest weekend in over a month.
Yesterday Adelaide reached a top of 34.8 degrees in the city. The mercury stayed quite high overnight with a minimum of just 23 degrees occurring around midnight, six above normal. This minimum was short lived as temperatures climbed back to 27 by 1:30am.
By 9am this morning temperatures had already exceeded 30 degrees and were hotter than yesterday's top by 10:30am. The mercury will continue to climb, reaching into the high thirties both today and tomorrow.
The blistering temperatures are due to a high pressure system near the east coast of Australia. This is funnelling hot and dry northerly winds into Adelaide. The very dry conditions, with relative humidity of only 10-20%, mean that the apparent temperature feels 3 to 4 degrees below the actual temperature.
The temperatures are expected to be just as hot tomorrow before cooling slightly on Sunday. This cooling will come with some extra cloud and an increase in relative humidity. The increase in moisture is likely to make this day feel hotter than the days before.
Monday is currently expected to be the day of the change with a southerly breeze arriving late morning. This will allow temperatures to cool down to the mid 20's until at least Thursday next week.
