Adelaide: record cold start to winter

Ben Domensino, Monday June 5, 2017 - 12:40 EST

Adelaide has ended a record-breaking string of cold mornings by managing to stay above five degrees.

While the city's low of 5.1 degrees this morning was three below average for June, it was Adelaide's first morning above three degrees since the start of winter.

Adelaide's four consecutive mornings below three degrees between Thursday and Sunday last week was the coldest spell since 1982 and the coldest on record this early in the year. This is quite an impressive feat, with data available for the last 130 years.

Sunday also marked the fifth consecutive morning below five degrees, which hasn't happened this early in the year for more than a century.

The unmistakably wintry change of seasons in Adelaide has also been felt across many areas in southern, central and eastern Australia. Multiple states and territories have endured a run of frosty mornings and crisp, clear days.

This fittingly-timed period of chilly weather was caused by a slow-moving high pressure system centred over the nation's southeast in recent days.

Frost will remain widespread each morning this week as high pressure systems remain a dominant feature over southern Australia.

Adelaide is forecast to enjoy a near-average minimum of seven degrees tomorrow morning, before dropping back to a nippy three degrees on Wednesday.
