A windy weekend for the Snowy Mountains

A windy weekend for the Snowy Mountains
Conditions about the upper slopes of the Australian Alps are looking pretty miserable this weekend as strong winds have the potential to create blizzard conditions. A deep low pressure system sitting over the Tasman Sea will continue to interact with a strong ridge of high pressure over the Australian mainland today to steer strong southerly winds over southeastern parts of the nation. Although snow showers over the next 48 hours are expected to remain light, delivering less than ten centimetres, these strong winds have the potential to whip up snow and reduce visibility significantly. The strongest winds are most likely about the highest peaks with Thredbo Top Station already seeing max wind gusts of 91 km/h just before sunrise this morning. At a similar time just across the border Falls Creek clocked max gusts of 93 km/h. Believe it or not, these winds have already started easing as reinforced by the max wind speeds recorded last night. Falls Creek registered gusts in excess of 107 km/h at around nine o'clock. As the Tasman low continues to move east, the high pressure ridge over the nation's southeast will become more dominant. By early next week winds will ease, skies will clear and snow sports will become a lot more enjoyable.
