A steamy night across VIC

A steamy night across VIC
Melbourne sweated through reportedly its hottest overnight March temperature on record, but it wasn't the only place in Victoria to sizzle under the moonlight. At 9am this morning, Coldstream, Yarram Airport and Orbost were all around 30 degrees. Meanwhile, Tatura only dropped to 23.5 degrees, their hottest March minimum since 1982. After a hot day yesterday (weather stations Victoria-wide all reported significantly above average temperatures), Victorians were probably looking forward to some relief in the evening. And this is generally the case - as the sun sets, the temperatures drop. However, although the surface layer of air cooled, just a few hundred metres above, the air remained very hot. This situation is known as a temperature inversion, where hotter air rests atop of cooler air. Although wind is usually thought to bring cooling, in situations like last night, gusty winds can cause mixing, meaning that this hot air is brought down to the surface. When it becomes calm, temperatures then gradually taper off. This was seen in Orbost, where winds gusting to around 15 km/h brought a four degree jump in temperature between 10:20pm and 10:40pm.
