$50m contract awarded to fix cyclone-hit roads
Monday August 27, 2012 - 12:17 EST
A $50 million project to repair cyclone damaged roads on the Cassowary Coast is expected to take about a year to complete.
The Cassowary Coast Regional Council has awarded a contract to engineering and infrastructure company Downer EDI.
It involves repairing sealed roads damaged by cyclones Tasha, Anthony and Yasi in 2010 and 2011.
Mayor Bill Shannon says it is the largest contract the council has ever awarded.
"It eclipses the sewerage works at Innisfail, it eclipses the Jubilee Bridge and it eclipses the Mission Beach sewerage as well," he said.
"So it's a very big contract at $50 million and we're looking forward to that work starting in the southern part of the region literally immediately."
