$4m radar set up as cyclone looms

Maria Hatzakis, Friday March 19, 2010 - 12:09 EDT

The weather bureau is working overtime to set up a new radar in central Queensland, with Cyclone Ului expected to cross the coast on Sunday.

The $4 million project was prompted by severe floods in Emerald in 2008.

The Member for Flynn, Chris Trevor, says the radar could be operational today, helping forecasters provide more accurate warnings.

"Two years ago it was terribly traumatic for people," he said.

"There was a lot of loss of livestock [lost], loss of personal property. People are jittery out there and quite rightly so in view of what they had to endure a couple of years ago. I don't want to see that again."
